In 1971, Starbucks began with a single Seattle coffee shop in the historic Pike Place Market. From this small café, they offered some of the best coffees in the world, freshly roasted with whole beans. The Starbucks number, taken from the novel Moby Dick, evokes the high seas, its legend and maritime tradition of the first coffee traders.
In 1981, Howard Schultz (CEO of Starbucks®) entered a Starbucks® salon for the first time and, after his first cup of “Sumatra”, he was immediately attracted to Starbucks® and joined the company a year later.
In 1983, during a trip to Italy, Howard Schultz fell in love with Italian coffee shops and their coffee rituals. He came up with the idea of bringing to the United States the tradition of Italian cafés, places of conversation and exchange, a third place halfway between home and work. He left Starbucks® briefly to create his own chain of coffee shops, Il Giornale, and returned in August 1987, when he bought Starbucks with the help of several local investors.
Since those early days, Starbucks chose to be a different company that not only celebrated coffee and its rich tradition, but also fostered human relationships.
